How long have you been playing lacrosse and who has had the biggest role in your successes? I have only been playing lacrosse for two years, this year being my second school season. My biggest influences have been my travel coach Sarah Burlingame (Coach Gooey) and Coach Jim Hill. Coach Gooey has always been available to help me whenever I needed it. She really stuck with me for the whole recruiting process knowing that I could make it at a high level and play for a school that I really wanted to attend. Coach hill has been the main reason that I started lacrosse. He helped me through my whole career and was really persistent about me playing. I use to run track, yet he convinced me to make the switch over to lacrosse; he never gave up on me.

South Florida girls lacrosse players to sign At least six laxers heading to Division One teams. April 10, 2012|By Dieter Kurtenbach, Sun Sentinel Lacrosse is growing in South Florida, and colleges are starting to take notice. Wednesday is spring national signing day, but for American Heritage girls lacrosse coach Jim Hill, it's also a step forward for his program. His Patriots team started play three seasons ago and Wednesday they will have its first college signee when Rebecca Sheinfeld signs a letter-of-intent with North Carolina's Campbell University. The midfielder and senior captain will sign at practice Wednesday in a small ceremony, the type of which Hill is hoping to have many more of in the near future. "It shows that lacrosse is alive in well, not just in the state of Florida, but also in South Florida," Hill said. "It speaks volumes to the dedicated young women in this sport." Hill said that the transition from club to varsity sport for many of the teams in the county has gone swimmingly and has furthered the already legitimate lacrosse culture in South Florida. "This shows that it should always have been a varsity sport," Hill said. "The switch has made it more competitive." That higher level of competition is drawing attention from outside of the area. Sheinfeld will be joining a first-year program in the Campbell Fighting Camels, a Division I program. Florida has only one Division I women's lacrosse program, the University of Florida. At least five other South Florida "laxers" will be playing Division I lacrosse next season. Park Vista's Alex Danks and Kristin Purdy will be attending Old Dominion and Jacksonville, respectively; Nicole Lescano of St. Thomas Aquinas will be heading to San Diego State; Jupiter's Nicole Isdaner will play midfielder at Lehigh and Olivia DiCarlantonio will be an Ohio State Buckeye.

Read MoreLocal lacrosse team heads to Jamaica to promote sport Team Jamaica has long been making waves across the international sporting arena. But the island’s efforts in lacrosse however, haven’t yet made global headlines. Top-notch all-female program in Weston, Storm Travel Lacrosse, hopes to change this, partnering with the Jamaica Lacrosse Association (JLA) in Kingston to host a joint training clinic and friendly match. A 14-member contingent of players, with a number of Caribbean-Americans, will be in Jamaica from June 17 to 21. The joint event brings together top female high school talents from across South Florida with budding teams from Jamaica’s female high schools, including St. Hugh’s High School for Girls, Convent of Mercy “Alpha” Academy and Holy Trinity High School. The goal, says Jamaican-born coach for Storm Travel Lacrosse, Cary Ragbeer, is to expose players on both sides to international talents, as well as provide support by donating equipment to the budding JLA program, which launched just two years ago. “I know that Jamaica is full of a ton of athletes,” says Storm Travel Lacrosse team member and Jamaican-American Katrina Ragbeer. “I’m looking forward to showing them another sport they may be aware of, and for them to teach me things about being an athlete that I didn’t even know.” “We’re trying to give back to Jamaica and help grow the program there,” says Cary. “It’s also a chance for our players to learn beyond just playing the sport itself.” The trip also hopes to highlight lacrosse as a viable team sports for female athletes in Jamaica. “Jamaican girls have netball and that’s about it,” notes Cary. “Lacrosse is very inexpensive, and is the fasting growing sport in America.” With continued collaboration with the JLA, Cary hopes to “expose as many young girls to lacrosse,” and build a team that “in the next three to five years can go and compete in the Women’s World Cup Lacrosse.” “Jamaica can do it,” says Cary. “Lacrosse requires speed and fitness, of which we have in abundance.” The trip also continues Storm Travel Lacrosse main campaign to change public expectations around the sport in South Florida. Rooted in the sporting traditions of Native Americans in Northeastern U.S. and Southeastern Canada, particularly the Iroquois tribe, the sport still carries associations as a “east coast” sports, with less diversity than other collegiate sporting arenas. Cary, however, hopes “to encourage more young women of color to explore the game,” says Cary. The team is open to female players from ages 8 to 18 at all levels of experience, including beginners.
